What harm could it do?
a) it could put people off if they don't like it - but these people are unlikely to have been tempted by the finished product anyway, so you're not losing anything.
b) someone could copy it... but you'd have very clear proof that they had done, having posted it on a certain date - before which they couldn't possibly prove they had written it.
What good could it do?
a) it could generate a base of impatiently waiting readers-to-be just chomping at the bit to throw their love and money at the finished product.
b) you'll get feedback - useful or otherwise yet to be seen. Positive feedback will motivate you to keep on keeping on... negative feedback is a bit of a bugger, but could also be annoyingly useful. You might even get some ideas...
c) a millionaire publisher may fall in love with it and you'll have that sports car before you know it.
Before beginning this project, make sure you have to hand:
a) balls of steel
b) a thick skin
c) an open mind
